Less rushing. More sea air.

Lisbon beaches: choose your kind of coast

Choose one coast, sort out the return, then leave room for lunch. Start with Carcavelos by train or make Guincho a separate outing.

Carcavelos Beach

In short

For a beach near Lisbon by train, start with Carcavelos or a Cascais town outing. Costa da Caparica needs a bus or onward connection; Guincho and Praia Grande are separate coastal journeys. Choose one coast, check the return, and use official beach conditions before swimming. A sunny city forecast is not a calm-sea forecast.

Carcavelos Beach

1 · Coast idea

Carcavelos

A train-based beach day with room for a surf lesson, pizza and sand time. Keep the station walk and a dry change in the plan.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A train-based day with a real beach as the main event; a surf lesson can give it a useful focus.
Make the day work
Leave time for the station walk and an early return if travelling with children. Ask the school about its meeting point and conditions, not just its address.
When to rethink
If you mainly want a sheltered swim, do not choose from a city sunshine icon. Read the actual beach notices and conditions first.

Train to Carcavelos, then walk to the beach. Choose a stopping service and check the return.

Beach reference, not an accessible entrance

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Cais do Sodré → Carcavelos station → beach walk

  1. Choose a Cascais-line service that stops at Carcavelos. Check the day and direction, including any replacement service.
  2. Keep the walk from the station in the plan; the rail platform is not the sand.

Last stretch. Walk from the station. The municipality describes stairs and ramps at the beach; this is not a checked step-free route from the train.

Coming back. Check a stopping return service before settling in. Leave time for packing up, the station walk and any replacement-bus arrangement.

Praia de Caxias in Oeiras

2 · Coast idea

Caxias

Onur’s saved beach favourite. Keep the outing short if that suits your day; check the actual beach notices.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A simpler train outing when you would rather choose one stop than tour the whole coast.
Make the day work
Check the stopping service, station exit and actual beach access. Keep a clear return option rather than assuming every train stops here.
When to rethink
A short train journey does not certify a step-free route, facilities or safe water. If any is essential, confirm it for the date.

Use a Cascais-line service stopping at Caxias. Check the station exit and beach access before travelling.

No verified pin is shown here; use the full destination guide for directions.

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Cais do Sodré → Caxias station → chosen beach access

  1. Use a Cascais-line stopping service for Caxias, not just any train heading west.
  2. Choose the actual station exit and beach access before you leave. The map is a beach reference, not a surveyed entrance.

Last stretch. Confirm the station-to-beach crossing, surface and access that suit your group; no step-free claim is made.

Coming back. Choose the stopping service back and check late replacement-bus notes. Keep the station approach in your leaving time.

Cascais

3 · Coast idea

Cascais · Praia da Duquesa

Good when a meal, a wander and an easy change of plan matter more than covering a long coastline.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A flexible town-and-bay outing when a meal, a wander and the ability to change plans matter as much as sand time.
Make the day work
Keep the town and bay as one day. If you add Guincho, treat it as a separate onward journey, not another beach beside the station.
When to rethink
For a surf lesson, choose the actual school and beach instead of navigating to a general Cascais pin.

Cascais-line train to Cascais. The bay and town are separate from the onward journey to Guincho.

Praia da Duquesa, not Cascais station or Guincho

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Cais do Sodré → Cascais station → town & bay

  1. Choose the Cascais-line service to Cascais and read any replacement-bus note for your date.
  2. Start with the town and bay. Guincho is a different onward journey; do not count it as the station beach.

Last stretch. Walk from Cascais station to the chosen Duquesa access. The map shows a beach reference, not an audited sand entrance.

Coming back. Keep the station as the return anchor. Check the actual late service before extending dinner or adding another coast.

Costa da Caparica

4 · Coast idea

Caparica · Praia do CDS

Use the CDS town seafront as a starting point, or choose a southern club as the whole destination. There are real cowork and surf options below.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A coast to match to a specific lesson, seafront plan or beach restaurant—not one interchangeable destination.
Make the day work
Choose the beach first. The terminal gets you to town; a southern beach venue needs an agreed last leg and return.
When to rethink
If you need a direct train-to-town outing or a very easy exit with tired children, compare the Cascais-line choices first.

3710 connects Areeiro and Costa da Caparica Terminal. A southern beach or club needs its own last leg.

Praia do CDS town seafront; southern clubs have separate locations

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Areeiro → 3710 → Costa da Caparica Terminal → chosen beach

  1. Reach Areeiro, then check the dated 3710 service to Costa da Caparica Terminal.
  2. Choose the actual beach, school or restaurant. The terminal is not every southern beach or club.

Last stretch. A town seafront, a lesson meeting point and a southern beach restaurant can mean different final connections. Arrange yours explicitly.

Coming back. Find the return stop and date-specific departures before heading farther south. Agree a backup if the beach-to-terminal leg does not work.

Tables inside Bar do Guincho overlooking the Atlantic

5 · Umur’s favourite

Guincho & Bar do Guincho

Umur’s confirmed coastal-table favourite. The separate sand bar is seasonal; the restaurant has a different operating season.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A coast-and-lunch day, with Bar do Guincho as a reason to make the journey rather than a rushed add-on.
Make the day work
Reach Cascais, then choose the dated onward service. Reserve the actual restaurant product; the seasonal sand bar is different.
When to rethink
If wind, sea conditions or the extra connection would spoil your day, keep a town-and-lunch alternative. This is not a guaranteed calm swimming beach.

Train to Cascais, then M05 via Quinta da Marinha or M15 via Areia. Municipal daily ticket: €1.50 in the app / €2 on board (2026 tariff), train separate. Check the actual departure and diversions.

Map point is Bar do Guincho, not the whole beach

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Cascais station → M05 or M15 → Guincho / chosen venue

  1. Reach Cascais first. Check M05 via Quinta da Marinha or M15 via Areia for the actual day and direction.
  2. These are circular services: select the right stop and return pattern, rather than assuming a bus across the road reverses the whole trip.

Last stretch. Check the stop-to-restaurant approach. The map point is the restaurant reference, not a surveyed accessible entrance to the beach.

Coming back. Read the onward bus and train together before booking a late table or staying for sunset. Check diversions and leave a fallback for the connection.

Outdoor tables and white parasols at Bar do Fundo on Praia Grande

6 · Umur’s favourite

Praia Grande & Bar do Fundo

Umur’s confirmed Praia Grande favourite. Choose this coast for lunch instead of racing through several palace visits.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
A Sintra-coast lunch with time to enjoy Praia Grande around it. Let the table be the main plan.
Make the day work
Use Bar do Fundo’s actual address and arrange the connection back. A restaurant reservation is not transport, a beach facility or permission to swim.
When to rethink
If your palace itinerary is already full, choose another day for this coast instead of making both experiences rushed.

Plan a separate Sintra-coast connection to the actual restaurant address. No direct train-to-beach journey is implied.

Map point is Bar do Fundo, not a surveyed beach entrance

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Portela de Sintra (north) → 1250 → Praia Grande → restaurant approach

  1. Arrange the journey to Portela Sintra (Estação Norte), then choose the dated 1250 service to Praia Grande.
  2. Select the actual stop for Bar do Fundo and check the final approach. The 1254 Magoito destination is not a substitute for this route.

Last stretch. Confirm the Praia Grande stop and final walk to the restaurant. A route endpoint is not proof of its exact doorway or step-free approach.

Coming back. Check the reverse 1250 timetable and your onward Lisbon connection before booking lunch or staying late. Do not assume the last bus fits the last train.

Arrábida Natural Park

7 · Coast idea

Arrábida · Figueirinha

Figueirinha gives this Arrábida outing a real beach anchor. Plan the separate connection from Setúbal, a food stop and the journey back.

Why this coast & getting there
Choose it for
Choose a particular cove or make it a Setúbal food-and-town day, with the connection planned before leaving.
Make the day work
Choose the exact beach, then check current access and seasonal transport. Keep the 2026 access programme separate from future seasons.
When to rethink
If you have no last-leg or return plan, enjoy Setúbal instead. The station pin does not solve access to every cove.

Reach Setúbal, then plan the chosen cove and its separate connection. Seasonal bus calendars differ.

Figueirinha beach reference, not Setúbal station or every Arrábida cove

A journey to plan, not just a pin.

Fertagus → Setúbal → a separately chosen Arrábida cove

  1. Choose your actual Fertagus origin and a Setúbal service for the date. The station is the town anchor, not a beach arrival.
  2. If the cove is the goal, choose it before leaving and confirm the current access programme and its separate onward connection.

Last stretch. The mapped option is Figueirinha. Arrange the separate last leg from Setúbal and check current road access. The pin is not proof of a year-round shuttle or a step-free entrance.

Coming back. Match the cove-to-town journey to the actual rail service back. A seasonal shuttle screenshot does not prove a daily or off-season service.

Put a little life around the beach.

Good tables, proper workspaces & actual surf schools.

Use the map categories above to narrow these stops. Coast choices also keep this list local to your plan. Each address has directions; only sourced coordinates get a pin.

8 · A first lesson or a proper surf session

Carcavelos Surf School

Av. Marginal · Praia de Carcavelos

Group and private lessons, plus board and wetsuit rental. Book the session before planning lunch around it; the school sets the meeting point and timing around conditions.

Make this stop work

The operator lists board and wetsuit with its lessons, storage for students’ belongings and an outdoor rinse shower. Check the age-specific product for children rather than choosing an adult group.

Mapped place reference; choose the actual entrance in directions.

9 · Pizza, a family lunch & a beach lounge

Capricciosa · Carcavelos

Av. Marginal · Praia de Carcavelos, S. Nascente

A useful sit-down lunch anchor: wood-fired pizzas and a sea-facing restaurant with a children’s area. Choose the Carcavelos branch, not the similarly named Cascais restaurant.

Make this stop work

Book a table if lunch is important to the day. An outdoor reservation may be cancelled in bad weather without an indoor replacement; a restaurant table is not a beach-bed booking.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

10 · An easy lunch around a town-beach day

Capricciosa · Praia da Duquesa

Alameda da Duquesa de Palmela · Cascais

The Duquesa branch puts lunch beside this beach rather than sending you back across town. Pizza and a children’s play area make it a practical family option.

Make this stop work

Ask for an indoor or sheltered table if the afternoon turns breezy. This is a meal stop, not a promise of supervised childcare or beach facilities.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

11 · Trade sandy feet for a bay-view table

Hífen

Av. Dom Carlos I 48 · Cascais

Portuguese cooking overlooking Cascais bay: a lunch or dinner option when you want the town to be part of the outing, not just the station you pass through.

Make this stop work

The restaurant lists indoor and outdoor seating and guest Wi-Fi. That does not make it a coworking desk: ask before opening a laptop, and keep calls and long work sessions elsewhere.

Mapped place reference; choose the actual entrance in directions.

12 · A meal, a lesson or a separate cowork pass

Dr. Bernard

Costa da Caparica · town seafront

Build a work-and-surf day around a real workspace, not a café table. The operator offers cowork day passes, a beachfront restaurant and surf lessons for different levels.

Make this stop work

Choose the correct product and confirm its meeting address: restaurant, school and cowork are not the same booking. Ask about call arrangements before reserving a work day.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

13 · Finish the calls. Then go to the beach.

Duna Cowork

Rua dos Pescadores 32C · Costa da Caparica

A dedicated town-centre workspace near Praia do Paraíso. The operator lists daily passes, acoustic phone booths, a meeting room and a kitchen; this is the more useful sort of booking for a real working day.

Make this stop work

Daily passes are listed for weekdays, 08:00–20:00; member 24/7 access is different. It also lists changing rooms, hot showers and board/wetsuit storage. Confirm a pass and any booth or shower needs before arrival.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

14 · Reserve your kind of slow beach day

Praia Princesa

Praia da Princesa · Estrada das Praias, Costa da Caparica

Choose between an indoor table, terrace or beach lounge, or book an umbrella, Bali or family-lounge beach product. Reserve the thing you actually want, not just the venue name.

Make this stop work

This is a separate southern-coast outing, not a short stroll from the town terminal. Check the selected date, product price, what is included and the return pickup before paying.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

15 · Food, music & a longer coastal afternoon

Praia Irmão

Costa da Caparica · southern beach strip

A restaurant and beach club with a music-and-events side. A good option to investigate for friends who want the afternoon to grow into an evening, rather than a quiet laptop session.

Make this stop work

Check the actual event programme, restaurant reservation and beach product separately. Music is not guaranteed every evening; arrange the road connection back before settling in.

Mapped place reference; choose the actual entrance in directions.

5 · Umur’s coastal-table favourite

Bar do Guincho

Praia do Guincho · north end, Cascais

Make lunch the reason to come out here. Leave time to look at the sea before sitting down, rather than trying to race back through a list of Lisbon sights.

Make this stop work

The restaurant and the seasonal sand bar are different operations. Ask for shelter if the wind picks up; a sunny Lisbon afternoon can still be a windy Guincho afternoon.

Mapped place reference; choose the actual entrance in directions.

16 · Let a school choose the session

Moana Surf School · Guincho

Estrada do Abano · Praia do Guincho

An actual lesson option for a Guincho day. Book for your ability and ask about the day’s meeting point rather than treating a beach pin as the surf-school arrival point.

Make this stop work

The nearby Bar do Guincho Wave Center lists equipment lockers and hot showers. Ask the school which facilities are included in your lesson; do not assume a restaurant booking gives you access.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

6 · Umur’s Praia Grande favourite

Bar do Fundo

Av. Alfredo Coelho · Praia Grande, Sintra

A long lunch looking out over Praia Grande is enough of a plan. Keep this as a coast day, rather than squeezing it between palace tickets and a hurried train home.

Make this stop work

Reserve with the actual venue and check the kitchen and return connection for your date. A seafront table is not a surf lesson, changing room or beach-bed booking.

Mapped place reference; choose the actual entrance in directions.

17 · A food stop on the Arrábida side

Figueirinha Beach Lounge

Praia da Figueirinha · Setúbal

The operator offers breakfast, restaurant meals, afternoon small plates and beach loungers. Choco frito is one of the dishes it highlights: an option to look for on the current menu.

Make this stop work

Confirm the exact meeting point and seasonal opening before booking. The beach reference is mapped separately; use the named venue and its address for the last leg.

Use the named address in directions; this venue is not given a guessed pin.

A beach day, not just a beach pin.

From the first coffee to the layer you’ll want later.

☀️ A few hours or a full day?

For a short break, choose one beach and one meal. For a whole day, add a booked lesson or a proper work session—not a second coast. Keep lunch and the journey home in the plan.

👒 With children or access needs

Bring shade, water, snacks and a dry change. Locate the toilet and an early-exit route before unpacking. Ask about highchairs, beach access and assistance if essential; a ramp on the sand does not certify the whole journey.

💻 A working day by the sea

Book Duna or Dr. Bernard cowork in Caparica. Confirm calls, power, access hours and storage with the workspace. Café Wi-Fi does not mean a reserved desk, sockets or permission to take video calls.

🏄 Your first waves

Choose a lesson, not just board rental. Tell the school your level, age and swimming ability, and ask about the wetsuit, changing, belongings and weather cancellation. Keep time for a shower and dry clothes before lunch.

🌅 The afternoon becomes evening

Pack a fleece or jumper, windproof layer and dry top, even if Lisbon feels warm. An open terrace can become chilly once the sun drops. Choose a sheltered table and confirm the kitchen, return stop and last useful connection before the next drink.

🎒 Before you leave home

Water, sunscreen, hat, towel, dry clothes, rubbish bag, a charged phone and a power bank. Add shoes for the approach and your prescription essentials. Keep valuables out of sight; ask a venue about storage rather than leaving a laptop on the sand.

🧺 Keep the budget comfortable

A picnic and your own towel are a different plan from beach beds, a lesson and a restaurant lunch. Set aside the return fare first, then check the actual per-person or per-bed product and what is included. Do not treat a table reservation as parking, transport or a lounger.

🚗 If you are driving

Choose the actual beach approach and parking before setting off. A club reservation does not reserve a parking space; road access and seasonal restrictions still apply. Keep bags and laptops out of sight and agree a pickup point for a taxi before dark.

Daytime & evening · plan the layers

Coastal wind and sea conditions can differ from Lisbon. See the daytime and evening forecast →

Before swimming or staying after dark

Read local beach notices and flags, and follow lifeguard instructions. Water quality, waves, tides and supervision are different checks; no planning filter here declares a beach safe. Keep away from unstable cliffs and watch children continuously. In an emergency call 112.

Beach notices ↗ · IPMA coastal forecast ↗ · Beach guidance ↗

By train: Carcavelos, Caxias or Cascais

Use the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré and choose the actual stopping service. Carcavelos means a walk from the station to the beach; Cascais means a town-and-bay day, not arrival at Guincho. Caxias is another stop on the same line and appears in Onur’s saved recommendations.

We would choose one destination rather than spend the afternoon repeatedly packing the beach bag. Keep the station walk, a food stop and the return in the plan. CP’s timetable includes replacement-bus services, so the late journey may differ from the train you took out.

Costa da Caparica: choose the actual beach

Carris Metropolitana lists 3710 between Areeiro and Costa da Caparica Terminal. That is a useful town connection, not a bus to every beach bar farther south. Read the selected route and date before choosing your stop.

The coastline is bigger than one terminal pin. Decide whether you want the town seafront, a lesson meeting point or a particular beach restaurant, then arrange that last connection. A reservation at a southern beach club does not include transport back to Lisbon.

Guincho and Praia Grande: make the coast the plan

For Guincho, first reach Cascais. MobiCascais lists M05 via Quinta da Marinha and M15 via Areia, both circular services through Guincho. Choose the actual departure and check diversions rather than following an old 405 or 415 screenshot.

The operator’s tariff dated 1 January 2026 lists a digital daily ticket at €1.50 through the MobiCascais app or a daily ticket bought on board at €2.00. It covers one operating day, not a rolling 24 hours, and does not include the train from Lisbon. Free resident, worker and student benefits have their own eligibility conditions.

Praia Grande belongs to a separate Sintra-coast outing. Bar do Fundo is one of Umur’s confirmed favourites there, while Bar do Guincho is his Guincho choice. We would choose a table and its return connection rather than squeeze either coast into a rushed palace day.

For a public-transport Praia Grande plan, Carris Metropolitana lists 1250 between Portela Sintra (Estação Norte) and Praia Grande. Choose the actual date, direction and stop in the operator’s timetable; the last stretch to Bar do Fundo still needs checking. Do not substitute a 1254 Magoito destination for this connection.

Arrábida: seasonal access, not a year-round car ban

The published 2026 Arrábida access season ran 4 June–15 September, with 07:00–20:00 controls. The eastern access restrictions and western parking-capacity controls differed, with authorised exceptions. That is not a blanket ban on every car throughout Arrábida, and it is not a confirmed 2027 calendar.

Pick the cove before the connection. Setúbal station is not the beach; summer shuttles have different calendars. Read the municipality’s current page and the operator’s dated timetable before travelling, especially outside the summer programme. Our Setúbal guide separates the town visit from the final beach leg.

With children, a surfboard or sunset in mind

The filters above are planning shortcuts, not a swimming-safety rating. For a family outing, look at the station walk, toilets, shade and the easiest way to leave early. Carcavelos’ municipal page describes ramps and seasonal services; that does not certify every train, pavement or beach service for your date.

For surfing, choose a school and let it match the session to your ability and conditions. For a sunset visit, choose the return before the last drink. Take water and a layer, use APA’s InfoÁgua for current beach notices, and follow local flags and lifeguards.

The maritime authority’s beach guidance also asks adults to keep watching children and to stay away from unstable cliffs. A family-planning label here is about the journey, not approval to swim. If supervision, step-free access or a particular facility is essential, confirm it for the chosen beach and date.

Quick answers

Which beach near Lisbon works by train?

Carcavelos is a useful starting point: take a stopping Cascais-line service and walk from Carcavelos station. Caxias and a Cascais town outing are other choices. Check the actual return and any replacement-bus service.

Does the Cascais train go to Guincho?

No. Guincho needs a separate onward connection from Cascais. Check current MobiCascais route and diversion information before choosing the beach or booking lunch.

Are cars banned from Arrábida all year?

No blanket year-round ban is described here. The published 2026 summer programme used different access controls in different zones, with exceptions. Check the current municipal programme; 2027 dates are not confirmed in this guide.
