An afternoon. Something you made.

Lisbon workshops: make something your own

Our Lisbon workshops shortlist gives you six ways to make something: pastry, tiles, a meal or a silver ring. Choose one class and give it the afternoon, including the journey.

In short

For a two-hour baking plan, start with Nat’elier. For azulejos, compare the one-hour D’Orey session with A Casa do Azulejo or Cerâmica S. Vicente. Compadre gives you a longer market-and-cooking outing; Paula Vieira is the silver-ring option. Tile firing matters if your flight is soon.

Choose one good outing

Choose one class, not a full day of bookings. The class is indoors; plan separately for the journey. The market outing still has an outdoor part.

    Baixa · Santa Justa

    Nat’elier

Make pastry and custard, then enjoy your own warm pastéis de nata (custard tarts).

    Duration, ages & booking

Already planning your next nata? Spend a couple of hours learning the pastry and custard instead of just ordering another one. A sweet indoor plan, with your own warm pastries at the end.

    The plan
Around two hours, with pastry made from scratch and three pastéis de nata made by you. Regular sessions are in English and Portuguese.

    Bringing children?
Group classes welcome ages 8+. For younger children, ask about a private session before booking.

    Before you book
The taught recipe contains dairy, eggs and wheat; this is not a gluten-free kitchen. Confirm allergies and your exact meeting point directly.

Chiado · confirm the booked workshop address

    D’Orey Tiles

Paint a tile in Chiado; book early in your trip so it has time for firing.

    Duration, ages & booking

A small creative pause in Chiado: choose a pattern, sit down with a brush and make a Lisbon souvenir yourself. Put this near the start of the trip—the tiles need time in the kiln.

    The plan
A beginner-friendly, approximately one-hour Majolica painting workshop, with materials included. Arrive ten minutes before your booked start.

    Taking it home
The operator lists collection after 3–4 working days, or paid shipping. Confirm collection and shipping costs before your flight.

    Before you book
Use the operator’s calendar, confirm the workshop address and check suitability for your children rather than assuming every age can join.

Benfica · Rua Ernesto da Silva 52B

    A Casa do Azulejo

Tile painting in Benfica; give the studio session its own slot.

    Duration, ages & booking

For a slower afternoon with colour and patterns, try a proper tile-painting studio in Benfica. It is further out, so give the workshop its own slot rather than squeezing it between central-Lisbon stops.

    The plan
The published workshop is up to two hours: transfer a drawing and paint a traditional 15 × 15 cm tile. Materials and firing are included.

    Taking it home
Your tile must be fired. Arrange collection or paid shipping directly; it is not a same-day souvenir.

    Before you book
The operator’s published minimum age is 12. Confirm current dates, price and language directly; the website’s indexed workshop page is not live availability.

    04

São Vicente · Rua de S. Vicente 17

    Cerâmica S. Vicente

    A two-hour façade-tile workshop in a family ceramics studio.

    Duration, ages & booking

Those repeating patterns on Lisbon’s façades make a lot more sense once you try one yourself. This family studio offers a two-hour version if you want a hands-on afternoon without committing the whole day.

    Time

    Children
Ask the studio; stencil work uses a scalpel
    Taking something home
About 3 days, then collection or paid shipping
    Before you book

    The plan
A beginner-friendly two-hour workshop: learn the tile-history basics, make a stencil and paint six small 7.5 × 7.5 cm tiles.

    Taking it home
Firing takes around three days; collection or paid shipping follows. Ask how that fits your departure date.

    Find the right door
The workshop terms specify Rua de S. Vicente 17, not the studio at number 31. Follow your confirmation and ask about children, sharp stencil tools and the session language.

Lisbon market + cooking school · confirm meeting point

    Compadre

Choose ingredients at a market, cook a seasonal Portuguese meal and eat what you made.

    Duration, ages & booking

A good plan if you would rather learn than tick off another restaurant. Start with the ingredients at a local market, cook a seasonal Portuguese meal, then sit down to eat what you made.

    Taking something home
The meal is part of the outing
    Before you book

    The plan
Around four hours, in English, with a chef-led market visit, hands-on cooking and the meal afterwards. The menu changes with the season.

    Ask about the cooking menu
Ask about the day’s menu and dietary needs before paying. “Sem coentros, por favor” is useful if, like me, you would rather skip coriander. No particular dish is guaranteed.

    Before you book
Shared sessions welcome ages 6+ with an accompanying adult. Confirm the market meeting point—it is not necessarily the cooking school’s door.

Near Avenida de Roma · follow the atelier confirmation

    Paula Vieira

A three-hour silver-ring session near Avenida de Roma; leave the afternoon clear.

    Duration, ages & booking

A souvenir you actually had a hand in making. This is a three-hour jewellery session near Avenida de Roma, so keep the afternoon clear and choose it because you enjoy making things—not just because it is raining.

    Time
About 3 hours · standard silver format
    Language
    English or Portuguese
    Children
No fixed minimum published; ask about younger participants
    Taking something home
Standard ring in one session; lost-wax needs two
    Before you book

    The plan
Beginner-friendly, hands-on silver-ring making with Paula; the operator lists approximately three hours and teaching in English or Portuguese.

    Choose the process carefully
The standard silver-ring session is about three hours. Lost-wax bookings need two sessions, with casting and silver charged separately; optional plating costs extra. Confirm the format and collection plan before booking.

    Before you book
Check the available dates, exact atelier address, included materials and total cost directly. Ask about age suitability before bringing children.

Give the tiles time

If you are flying tomorrow, the firing and collection plan is the decision—not just which pattern you like. Book earlier in your stay, or ask for a shipping quote before paying.

D’Orey’s contact page lists shops in Chiado and Castelo. An area map is not confirmation of the workshop door; follow the address in your booked session. S. Vicente’s class is at number 17, not the separate studio at 31.

A few checks before you pay

  1. Confirm its language, current total, what is included and cancellation terms on the operator’s booking page. These links are not live availability or a booking made for you.
  2. Tile collection can take several days. Ask about working days, pickup windows, shipping cost and whether the delivery arrangement works for your address.
  3. Minimum ages and accompanying-adult rules differ. A studio using tools is not automatically suitable for a toddler.
  4. Studio steps, toilets, seating and accessible workstations are not verified here. Ask the operator about what you need; a nearby Metro station does not establish a step-free final route.
  5. Benfica, São Vicente and Avenida de Roma are separate journeys, not all a short wander from Santos. Use your session confirmation for the meeting point.

Quick workshop questions

Can I take a painted tile home the same day?

Do not assume so. D’Orey lists 3–4 working days; S. Vicente describes about three days. A Casa do Azulejo arranges collection after firing. Shipping is extra and needs a direct quote.

Can young children join every class?

No. Nat’elier’s regular groups start at 8, A Casa do Azulejo at 12, and Compadre’s shared outing at 6 with an adult. Ask the other studios about suitability before booking.

Is the cooking class vegan or allergy-safe?

No such guarantee is made here. Nat’elier teaches a traditional dairy/egg/wheat recipe; Compadre’s seasonal menu can include animal ingredients. Ask the operator before paying, including about cross-contamination.

Does every ring workshop finish in one afternoon?

The standard Paula Vieira silver format is a three-hour session. Lost-wax is a separate two-session process with extra casting/silver charges. Confirm your chosen format.

Have the hosts attended all six?

No personal attendance is claimed. These are source-checked ideas chosen for their practical differences; the operators run and sell their own sessions.
