The useful bits, in one place.
Lisbon visitor guide: your first days
Arriving, getting around, finding a pharmacy, ordering lunch. Start with the practical answers, then leave the rest of the day open — wherever you are staying.
Find a quick answer ↓
In short
For a first visit to Lisbon, choose the airport journey for your bags, compare the actual transport ticket and keep your first day close together. Carry shoes with grip and a light layer. Save 112 for emergencies and the duty-pharmacy finder before you need it. Check the weather and leave space for one meal or wander you really want.
From the airport to your part of town
Start with the destination, the bags and your arrival time. The airport’s Metro journey example is roughly 20 minutes to Saldanha. Allow extra time for transfers and the final journey to your hotel. Use the current Metro map for any transfer, then check the final walk.
For an app-booked Uber or Bolt, ANA lists pickup at P2, Level 2, arrivals level. Follow current airport signs and your app’s assigned point. For a taxi, use the official queue, check the meter and ask for a receipt; do not accept an unsolicited offer inside the terminal.
Do not plan around the old Aerobus shuttle or an old saved airport link. Start with ANA’s currently listed transport options. With children, a mobility need or bulky luggage, arrange the right vehicle before relying on a standard pickup.

One traveller, one ticket or payment device. A Metro bank-card tap is not the same product as a loaded Carris/Metro ticket, zapping or a combined day pass. The €0.50 navegante occasional support card is separate from the credit or ticket loaded onto it.
| Product | Fare | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Carris / Metro ticket | €1.90 | 60 minutes; no consecutive Metro entries |
| Metro zapping journey | €1.72 | Prepaid credit; a change of operator can mean another charge |
| Metro bank-card journey | €1.92 | Same physical card or same device at entry and exit |
| 24h Carris / Metro | €7.25 | 24 hours from first validation |
| 24h + Cacilhas ferry | €10.35 | Carris / Metro / Transtejo Cacilhas |
| 24h + CP urban lines | €11.40 | Carris / Metro / CP urban network |
A Carris tram ticket bought on board is €3.30 for that vehicle; it is not the €1.90 loaded ticket. Ask staff if you are unsure what is already loaded before adding a different product.
Using a phone or watch at Metro gates? Keep it charged, and tap out with that same device, not the plastic card behind it. Check service and lift notices before travelling.

Portugal uses the euro. Keep a payment backup for a small café, market stall or an awkward card terminal, and check any ATM or currency-conversion fees before confirming a transaction.
At the table, ask what the bread, olives or small starters cost before eating them. For seafood sold by weight, check the unit and the portion. Look at the actual bill before deciding whether you want to leave an extra tip; do not turn a suggested amount into an automatic holiday expense.
The municipal overnight tax is €4.00 per eligible person per night, up to 7 nights per stay. The municipal flyer applies it from age 13, with exemptions. Check your reservation so the same tax is not paid twice.
Lisbon municipality · tourist tax · checked 2026-10-18 ↗Turismo de Portugal · useful information ↗Phone data without the surprise
Check your provider’s roaming terms first. Eligible EU roaming is subject to fair-use conditions; it is not an unlimited-data promise for every plan, and it does not automatically apply to a non-EU SIM or a satellite connection on a ship or aircraft.
If a local SIM or eSIM makes more sense, compare the current MEO, NOS and Vodafone options for your phone, trip length and data needs. Check whether your device is unlocked and supports the product. Save your arrival directions and essential confirmations before leaving Wi-Fi.
European Commission · roaming conditions · checked 2026-10-18 ↗Safety, pharmacies and help
For an emergency, call 112. For non-emergency clinical guidance, SNS 24 provides triage, advice and routing. A nearby hospital is not automatically the right service for every problem.
For a pharmacy, use the official duty finder for the date and area you need. Check its service category: some pharmacies require a 1400 call after the stated hour. A search result is not always a 24-hour walk-in service.
Portuguese government · emergency contacts · checked 2026-10-18 ↗Official duty-pharmacy finder · checked 2026-10-18 ↗Keep bags closed and valuables secure in crowded transport and busy places. Avoid leaving a phone on a café table or valuables visible in a car.
For hospital or dental contacts, the practical notes below link to the relevant operator. Call first for a non-emergency visit and confirm the service, costs and insurance.
Sundays, holidays and a flexible plan
Check the actual business or attraction for your date. Do not assume that every small shop opens on Sunday, or that a museum’s normal weekly schedule applies on a public holiday. A restaurant being open does not guarantee its kitchen is still serving.
We would keep the first day simple: sort the bags, choose a meal near where you are staying and leave room for one short wander. Put the longer hill walk or timed visit on a day with more margin.
Your first evening: one good anchor
We would choose one dinner, not three distant reservations. Staying around Santos or Chiado? A short Ribeira das Naus waterfront wander before dinner is an optional start, not a reason to carry bags across town. Check the weather and skip the exposed walk if it does not suit the evening.
- Sort the arrival and bags. Keep your accommodation’s confirmed arrangements handy.
- Pick a table in one area. Read the menu, book if needed and check when the kitchen serves.
- Leave the extra stop optional. A wine bar or a dated show can be enough; check the return journey before staying for another.
Plugs, water and the everyday bits
The tourism authority lists 230 V / 50 Hz domestic electricity and European-standard sockets. Check the input rating and instructions on your appliance before using it with an adapter.
EPAL monitors the quality of Lisbon’s public water supply. A refill bottle is useful for city walks; follow any building-specific notice or public advisory, and do not treat every decorative fountain as a drinking-water point.

The practical notes
39 city topics from our guide, separate from apartment and reservation instructions. Check the source links for current operator arrangements; individual original-note dates are kept where available.
Getting around
Airport arrival
Choose Metro, a licensed taxi or an app-booked car for your actual destination. ANA’s roughly 20-minute Metro example is Aeroporto–Saldanha, not a door-to-door promise for every neighbourhood. Check your accommodation’s last stretch and the current airport pickup signs.
Read the detailed guide →One ticket per traveller
Use one ticket/card per traveller. For a Metro bank-card journey, tap in and out with the same physical card or the same phone/watch; keep that device charged and do not swap it for the plastic card at the exit. A navegante occasional card can hold tickets or zapping credit, with top-ups starting at €3. A Metro bank-card tap is not a ticket for every tram, train and ferry. Compare the products below with your route.

Street parking & nearby garages
For Santos, Bica and Cais do Sodré, compare legal street spaces with Mercado da Ribeira and Calçada do Combro garages. Check the exact bay’s signs, paid hours and permit restrictions; compare garage entrances, vehicle clearance and overnight terms before driving in.

Historic lifts: check before setting out
Closures and replacement services can change. Check Carris notices rather than building your whole day around a funicular.
Belém from Cais do Sodré
Compare the Cascais-line train towards Belém with Carris tram/bus options such as 15E. Check the current stopping pattern and disruptions before setting off; leave room for the river and pastries.
Cacilhas, then Costa da Caparica
For the public-transport option, cross from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas and check Carris Metropolitana 3011 towards Costa da Caparica. Match the bus times to the ferry and check the return journey too.

Original guide note: 2026-10-01. This date is not a live opening-hours check.
Tram 28 without building your day around it
The historic tram is an option, not a requirement. Check Carris for the route and any diversions; queues can eat into a day. Walking a smaller section of Alfama can be just as rewarding.
Metro: use the current map
Use the Metro operator’s current network and lift-status pages. For Cais do Sodré from the airport, the existing route changes from Red to Green at Alameda. A station appearing in construction news is not necessarily open.
Taxi, Uber or Bolt?
An official taxi or Uber/Bolt can make a luggage-heavy arrival easier. Follow the airport’s current pickup signs; for a taxi, ask for the meter and a receipt. Traffic changes the journey time, so avoid planning around an exact minute count.
Gira bikes & riverside routes
For a ride, look at the Gira app and choose a route you are comfortable with. Lisbon hills and tram rails deserve care. The riverfront is a simpler starting idea than the busiest historic lanes.
Day trips
Sintra: choose one main sight
Reserve a timed visit through the official operator, then allow time for hills, transport and lunch. Check access and weather alerts.
A beach day by train
Choose one beach or coastal town, allow for the station-to-beach walk and check the return service. Follow lifeguards and beach flags.
Easy days
A first-day walk without rushing
Start in Santos, continue via Cais do Sodré and Ribeira das Naus to Praça do Comércio, then explore Baixa and Chiado.
Budget
Is the Lisboa Card right for you?
Compare current pass inclusions with the attractions you actually want. Check closures and timed reservations before buying.
A lower-cost Lisbon day
Combine the riverfront, Estrela garden and an outdoor viewpoint. Leave room for a coffee and a slower wander.
Lisbon tourist tax
Lisbon’s municipal overnight tax is €4 per eligible person per night, capped at seven nights per stay, with exemptions. Check whether your accommodation reservation has already collected it before paying again. The municipality’s guide explains eligibility and exemptions.

Food & culture
Reserve dinner & fado
For a special evening, confirm price, inclusions, cancellation terms and dietary needs directly with the venue.
Bread and olives may be a paid couvert
Ask about small starters before eating and politely decline anything you do not want. Check quantities for seafood priced by weight.
Sem coentros, por favor
If coriander/cilantro is not your thing, ask “Sem coentros, por favor” — without coriander, please. This describes a preference, not an allergy; tell the team separately about any actual allergies.
What to taste in Lisbon
Start with a pastel de nata (custard tart). A bifana is a pork sandwich; a prego is a steak sandwich. Ginjinha is a sour-cherry liqueur, sometimes served in a chocolate cup. Pick what appeals—this is not an eating challenge.
A fado evening, not background music
The voice and Portuguese guitar deserve some quiet. Book a venue whose menu and format suit you; ask about food, drinks and minimum spend. Chat between songs, not through them.
Local life
Enjoy the city; respect the neighbours
Historic streets are also people’s homes. Keep voices low at night, leave doorways clear and take bags and doors gently in shared buildings. Follow your accommodation’s own house rules.
Shoes with grip & a light layer
Cobblestones can be slippery, especially after rain. Take water, sun protection and a layer for windy viewpoints or the coast.
A few useful Portuguese phrases
Olá: hello. Bom dia: good morning. Por favor: please. Obrigado/obrigada: thank you. A conta, por favor: the bill, please.
Family
One attraction plus outdoor time
Choose a main indoor attraction, then a garden or waterfront break. Steep historic streets may suit a carrier better than a stroller.

Pharmacies after hours
Use the official duty-pharmacy finder for the date and area you need. Some listings require a 1400 call after a stated hour; a result is not automatically a 24-hour walk-in pharmacy. Check the service category and call before travelling.
Dental help
Call a dental clinic before travelling and ask about an appointment, charges and insurance. Direclin lists Roma and Alvalade branches; the original guide also includes Clínica Dentária do Príncipe Real. These are starting points, not promises of walk-in or 24-hour emergency treatment. For clinical guidance call SNS 24; for an emergency call 112.

Practical
Simple precautions in busy places
Keep bags closed and valuables secure in crowds and on public transport. Avoid leaving a phone on a café table or valuables visible in a car.
Phone data & useful apps
Check your provider’s roaming terms before buying a SIM or eSIM. Eligible EU plans have fair-use conditions; a non-EU plan can have different charges. Compare MEO, NOS and Vodafone offers for your phone, trip length and data needs. Save important journey details before setting off.
Groceries & the fresh-food market
Around Santos, My Auchan at Rua de São Paulo 80 is an option for everyday basics. FOOD Santos at Largo Conde-Barão 15 is the organic-focused grocery/café idea; check individual product labels and the exact branch’s opening hours. Mercado da Ribeira’s fresh-food stalls are separate from the ready-to-eat food hall.

Original guide note: 2026-10-12. This date is not a live opening-hours check.
Thoughtful souvenirs
Portuguese wine, canned fish, cork and well-made home pieces travel better than a random trinket. For tiles, buy from a legitimate shop—never buy pieces stripped from buildings.
Luggage between plans
Choose independent storage around your next journey, not just the nearest pin. Check opening hours, bag limits, charges and the collection deadline. Any bag drop at your accommodation needs its own confirmation; keep shared hallways clear.
Read the detailed guide →Tap water & a refill bottle
EPAL monitors Lisbon’s public water supply. Bring a refill bottle for city walks, and follow any building-specific notice or public advisory. Do not assume every decorative fountain is drinking water.

For a coffee and a gentle start. The Bica breakfast burrito or matcha pancakes are in the food notes—then make the river your next stop.
First-visit questions
Which Lisbon ticket should I buy?
Choose for the operators you will use. The selected 2026 fares are €1.90 for a Carris/Metro ticket, €1.72 for a Metro zapping journey and €1.92 for a Metro bank-card journey. The occasional support card is separate. Use the same physical card or same device to enter and leave the Metro.
Does a bank-card tap pay for every tram and train?
No. A Metro bank-card journey is not a combined Carris, CP or ferry product. Compare the whole journey and the exact ticket conditions before paying.
Where do I meet an Uber or Bolt at Lisbon Airport?
ANA currently lists the app-car pickup at P2, Level 2, arrivals level. Follow the current airport signs and your app’s assigned pickup point, and match the driver and number plate.
What number should I call in an emergency?
Call 112 for an emergency. For non-emergency clinical guidance, SNS 24 is on 808 24 24 24. The government source above explains the different services.
How do I find a pharmacy open late?
Use the official 1400 duty-pharmacy finder for your date and area, and check the service category. Some results require a call after a stated hour rather than a walk-in visit.
Is the tourist tax included in my booking?
Check your own reservation. Lisbon’s municipal charge is €4 per eligible person per night, up to seven nights per stay, with exemptions. Do not pay it twice if your booking has already collected it.
Can this guide confirm early check-in or store my bags?
No. Confirm accommodation arrangements directly in your booking conversation. The independent luggage-storage guide helps you choose a separate backup plan.
Sources, scope and your own arrangements
The transport, emergency, pharmacy, electricity, water and roaming basics above were checked on 18 October 2026 against the linked primary sources. Prices and service can change. Other guide notes keep their own dates, so you can tell when each detail was checked.
This is a city guide, not medical advice, live venue inventory or a promise about your accommodation. For a reservation, arrival arrangement or private entry details, use your booking conversation.
