Lisbon has useful pedestrian lifts, escalators and funiculars. They are not all the same—and a lift on the map is not a promise it is running. Find the connection, check its status and keep a walking alternative.
EMEL’s pedestrian lifts are separate from the historic Carris lifts and funiculars. Carris currently lists Santa Justa, Bica, Glória and Lavra as out of service during testing. Graça has its own dated maintenance notice for 26–30 October 2026.
A “?” means the current fact is unconfirmed. Old published schedules and a blank disruption field are not treated as live service information. Only a recently confirmed connection with usable hours, mapped access nodes and the needed access information can enter a route. Otherwise the walking alternative stays in place.
11 connections.
10 connections have separately mapped lower and upper locations. Only six have exact street-network walking handoffs; closed Carris sites remain orientation references. Entrecampos retains an infrastructure reference, not a guessed pair. These are map records, not an on-site accessibility survey; a missing point stays missing.

Live service ?
Carris has announced planned maintenance from 26–30 October 2026, with service expected to return on 31 October. This is a dated notice, not confirmation that it is operating now.
Published hours
Daily 07:00–21:00
Fare
€4.30 · Published ticket for two rides; Navegante is accepted. Confirm the ticket arrangement before boarding.
The upper pin is the public vertical-lift entrance that reaches the upper funicular station, not the platform. EMEL’s2024terms describe this alternative to the stairs. Published service hours and the planned closure are not a live operating signal.
A useful first part of the Baixa-to-Castelo climb. The official accessible itinerary describes this connection; that does not confirm its live operation.
Mapped exterior doors connect to lift levels 0 and 3a through OSM ways675059007/675059008. The tourism itinerary describes the lift connection as accessible; the surrounding streets and castle approach are not a surveyed step-free route.
The top point is the mapped terrace exit4747324828, not lift door10687065590. OSM level-0/level-7 connecting ways367834817/367834815 associate the two exterior accesses with this lift. The final castle approach still climbs.
The upper point is the exterior level-2 sidewalk junction12585228960 on way1359627267, not the multi-level shaft door9021556801 or intermediate exit6489933001 near steps. OSM connectivity is not a curb-width or step-free inspection.
OSM way633667844 lists incline=up and conveying=forward in this endpoint order. This records the mapped uphill direction, not a promise of live operation. An escalator is not a step-free lift.
A mapped connection between Rua Norberto de Araújo and Santa Luzia, near Portas do Sol. Its surrounding Alfama approaches and live operation are not confirmed.
Both OSM nodes are explicitly named elevator entrances. The upper building is on layer1. The municipal project confirms the Rua Norberto de Araújo–Santa Luzia connection, not that the surrounding Alfama approach is step-free.
Two EMEL lifts serve the pedestrian bridge between Rua de Entrecampos and Rua Infante Dom Pedro. These are not the railway station or Metro lifts. Exact exterior access pairs and live operation are unconfirmed; this connection is outside the historic-centre walking tool.
The lower exterior entry is distinct from the cabin doors repeated on multiple floors. The upper pin is the street-side approach to the walkway, not the rooftop viewpoint or the separate access=no lift on Rua do Carmo. The 20 October map snapshot also shows stairs on the upper approach. Carris still lists Santa Justa out of service; do not assume the bridge, terrace or lift is open or step-free.
The lower point is the named exterior door; the upper point is a mapped boarding platform, not a verified street-network entrance. Carris still lists the funicular out of service. These locations are for orientation, not a promise of boarding or an accessible connection.
These two points are the named funicular platforms, not the nearby replacement-bus stops. Neither is bound as a surveyed street-access entrance. The operator closure remains in force; the map pins do not activate a ride or a walking shortcut.
The lower station lies on mapped pedestrian way32331216; the upper named entrance is reached by footway95408984. Coordinates come from the public 20 October map snapshot, not a new field visit. The funicular remains closed; the location pair is not a boarding instruction.
A lift cabin is only one part of a journey. Doorways, ramps, kerbs, the street at the top and the final entrance matter too. Escalators are not step-free links. The castle approach still has climbing and uneven paving after the public lifts.
Compare the gentler-climb option in our walking tool. If no suitable route appears, choose a different starting point or use the operator’s transport alternatives. Confirm station exits and access before travelling.
Official EMEL infrastructure records, Carris service notices and public OpenStreetMap access points. Each fact keeps its own source and check date; some coordinates retain the 20 October map snapshot. Dates on the EMEL feed’s infrastructure records can be much older than the feed itself. Old or undated schedule records are labelled and cannot qualify as current routing hours. We have not renewed fares or claimed an on-site survey.
