Lisbon Baixa
A feel for the neighbourhood

Baixa

I have with about and I love

The gentler central grid between Rossio and Praça do Comércio. A nice start before you tackle the hills.

In short

Baixa is Lisbon’s gentler central grid, with Rossio, Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio making a straightforward first walk. Start with the wave-patterned paving at Rossio, follow Rua Augusta towards the yellow arcades, then pause at the river. It is a useful beginning before choosing the hillier parts of the city.

The feel of Baixa

We use Baixa as a clear starting point, especially when the old-city lanes can wait until later. Rossio gives the walk its wave-patterned paving; Rua Augusta supplies a line to follow instead of a new turning at every corner. It is a different shape of afternoon from Alfama’s small streets.

At Praça do Comércio, the yellow arcades and riverfront change the pace again. Stop rather than immediately launch into the next neighbourhood. If the group has had enough walking, this can be the end of a complete outing; if not, choose the next part of Lisbon before heading towards a hill.

One possible wander

Follow Rossio, Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio in that order for a centre-to-river walk. The three stops are the route, not three ticketed visits to squeeze in. We would save any castle or Alfama climb for a separate choice once you reach the end.

Eat & drink around the outing

Choose a table for your route, rather than a restaurant just because it shares a neighbourhood label.

Good to know

Baixa’s central grid is the gentler option in our neighbourhood guide, not a certification of step-free access. For food, use the restaurant guide to choose a table and its current details rather than assuming every nearby venue offers the same kind of meal.

Quick answers

What is an easy first walk in Baixa?

Follow Rossio to Rua Augusta, then continue to Praça do Comércio. This is the gentler central-grid route in our guide, ending beside the river.

What can we see at Rossio?

Rossio is the wave-patterned-paving stop at the start of our Baixa walk. From there, choose the river route via Rua Augusta or a different outing towards the avenue.

Should we add Alfama to the Baixa walk?

Treat Alfama as an optional second outing rather than a compulsory next stop. Baixa gives you the gentler grid; Alfama adds small lanes and a hillier approach.
