PARKING IN SANTOS · BICA · CAIS DO SODRÉ

Parking in Santos, Bica & Cais do Sodré

Street spaces can sometimes be found around our part of Lisbon. A compact car and confident manoeuvring help in the narrow lanes; keep a nearby garage as your easy alternative.

In short

Look for a legal street space if that suits you, with the sign and meter checked for that exact bay. For a more predictable arrival, compare Mercado da Ribeira / Cais do Sodré, Calçada do Combro and Largo de Jesus before driving into the small streets.

Three useful garage alternatives.

Choose the entrance and the walk back, not just the closest pin. These are independent paid garages; opening hours do not guarantee a free bay.

GarageVehicle accessWhat to check
Mercado da Ribeira / Cais do SodréPraça D. Luís ITelpark lists 24-hour access and a 1.90 m height limit. Use the garage entrance, not the market’s pedestrian door.
Calçada do CombroBetween Calçada do Combro 93 and Travessa André Valente 7EMEL lists 24-hour access. Ask the operator about vehicle clearance; no height figure is assumed here.
Largo de JesusLargo de JesusTelpark lists 24-hour access and a 1.90 m height limit. Another option on the hill side.

Mercado da Ribeira is the garage we have shared with guests, on the lower, river side of the home area. Calçada do Combro and Largo de Jesus give you alternatives on the hill side. Check the final walk to your own destination: luggage, slopes and steps matter as much as distance.

A space on the street can work.

The historic lanes are narrow, so a compact car is easier than a large SUV. Street spaces are not reserved for the apartment. If a suitable bay is available, check it carefully before leaving the car; if not, move on to your garage backup rather than circling the smallest lanes.

  1. Check paid hours, maximum stay, permit restrictions and any temporary notice. Read the signs for that bay rather than relying on paint colour alone.
  2. Doorways, loading areas and pedestrian access are not overflow parking. A hazard light does not turn an obstructing stop into an allowed one.
  3. EMEL lists coin or MB WAY payments at meters and its ePark app. In an app, check the plate, tariff zone and paid period before confirming.

EMEL’s payment guidance ↗

Ask about collection, not just the daily price.

For an overnight or multi-day stay, confirm the total charge, collection access and whether repeated exits are included. A daily maximum is not necessarily an unlimited in-and-out pass, and a booking offer may have different terms from the drive-in tariff.

Check the full vehicle height, including roof boxes, against the operator’s limit before entering. If you have a van or a taller rental, ask directly rather than hoping it fits. Keep your ticket or booking confirmation and take a quick photo of the level and bay. Keep valuables with you, not visible in the car.

For street parking, paying one session does not override a maximum stay or permit restriction. Recheck the exact bay’s rules for the whole period you intend to leave the car.

Sort the bags, then the parking.

Choose a backup garage before the final drive. Ask your accommodation where you can unload legally and what the final approach involves. Do not block a lane or doorway, or rely on being able to wait outside.

Check the entrance, stairs and lift arrangements before bringing large bags. Book any luggage help directly with your accommodation.

Before you turn into the lane.

Are all white-marked spaces free?

Don’t use the paint alone to decide. Read the sign, meter and temporary notices for the exact space, including any resident or loading restriction.

Will a large SUV or roof box fit in the garage?

Check your vehicle’s full height. Telpark lists 1.90 m for Mercado da Ribeira and Largo de Jesus. Confirm it with the operator before driving in; ask EMEL for Calçada do Combro clearance.

Should I rent a car for all my Lisbon days?

Choose it for the trips you actually want to make. If your plans are mostly city walks, compare public transport and occasional car journeys with rental and parking costs. A car for a day trip is a different decision from keeping one throughout the stay.
