Keep the thank-you. Lose the awkwardness.
A thank-you, not a test at the table
A lovely dinner should not end with a maths exam or a moment of panic at the card machine. Read the bill, decide whether you want to add something, and ask how it will reach the team. The point is a genuine thank-you, not choosing the largest number on a screen.

In short
Portugal’s tourism authority says restaurant service is included in the bill and describes an additional 5–10% tip as customary. Treat that as context, not an instruction to add a fixed percentage to every purchase. Read the bill, check anything already added and choose a thank-you that feels right for the service.
At a restaurant, start with the actual bill
Visit Portugal describes service as included and an extra 5–10% as customary. That is a useful reference for a meal, not a universal rule for every café, bar or transaction. Look at the total and any separately listed charge before deciding on an addition.
If something is unclear, ask the team what it means. A line on a receipt and a suggested tip on a terminal are different things. Give yourself a moment to read instead of feeling that the person behind you needs an instant answer.
Choose the amount, then the method
You may want to leave a small fixed amount or work from a percentage. The example below is arithmetic, not a recommended minimum. A €40 bill plus €2 becomes €42; plus €4 becomes €44. Choose your addition before paying, so you do not tip twice by accident.
Before paying, ask whether a card tip can be added and whether it goes to the team. Do not assume every restaurant processes tips the same way. If you prefer to leave cash, confirm what you want charged to the card first and keep the two decisions clear.
| Optional addition | Extra | Total |
|---|---|---|
| No addition | €0 | €40 |
| 5% example | €2 | €42 |
| 10% example | €4 | €44 |
For coffee or a casual drink, keep it simple
For a small purchase, decide whether you want to leave a small thank-you rather than applying restaurant percentages mechanically. There is no need to turn one espresso into a complicated exchange. A friendly obrigado or obrigada also makes the interaction less transactional.
Have the amount ready if you want to round up, and say what you mean before walking away. Do not assume a staff member will interpret every coin left on a table as a tip. The clearest approach is simply to tell them that the change is for the team.
Keep transport and tour payments separate
For taxis, Visit Portugal mentions rounding up or an additional 5–10%. Look at the actual fare first and make any optional addition clear. Check the terms of your particular app or booked service; this is optional guidance, not a required charge.
A tip-based walking tour needs a different budget from an already-paid ticket. Read the operator’s description before joining, and decide whether the model suits your budget. Our tour guide explains the difference without promising that an experience advertised as free has no expected contribution.
A couple of useful things to say
“A conta, por favor” means the bill, please. “Posso deixar a gorjeta no cartão?” asks whether you can leave the tip on the card. You can also simply point to the total and ask the team to confirm the amount you would like to pay.
There is no need to perform local expertise. Speak clearly, give the team time to answer, and use English if that makes the transaction easier for everyone. The same calm approach helps when splitting a group bill: agree the amounts together before passing the terminal around.
Quick answers
Do I have to add 10% to every bill in Lisbon?
Do not treat a suggested percentage as an automatic instruction. Visit Portugal says restaurant service is included and describes an extra 5–10% as customary. Read the bill and decide whether to add something.
Can I tip by card in Lisbon?
Ask the individual business before payment. This guide does not assume that every terminal supports tips or that every venue distributes them in the same way.
Is a free walking tour completely free?
Check the operator’s model before joining. A tip-based tour can expect a contribution even though it has no fixed ticket price. Budget for that separately from a restaurant thank-you.
