The Atlantic can have the afternoon

Ericeira day trip from Lisbon

An Ericeira day trip gives you a coastal town to enjoy even when you are not getting on a surfboard. We would start with the bus home, then work backwards to lunch, the seafront and any lesson. The waves can keep their own timetable.

Ericeira harbour and its seafront buildings

In short

For an Ericeira day trip from Lisbon, check Carris Metropolitana’s Campo Grande connection and the return for your actual day. Give the town a full outing, with seafood and a seafront wander. A surf lesson may meet at a beach outside the centre, so arrange its transfer separately. Current rapid-line fares are €4.65 onboard or €3.10 prepaid.

Lisbon to Ericeira: choose the actual bus

Carris Metropolitana lists 2801 between Ericeira Terminal and Lisboa Campo Grande via A21/A8. Choose the right direction, date and boarding stop on the operator’s page; weekday and weekend options are not interchangeable.

Before leaving Lisbon, open the return as well. Do not build dinner plans around a remembered last bus or a timetable screenshot from another season. Keep the actual stop information available for the journey back.

Ericeira bus fares and payment

The current rapid-line tariff is €4.65 onboard or €3.10 with an appropriate prepaid product. These are alternatives for a journey, not two charges to add together. Check your card and the selected service before travelling.

The operator accepts cash onboard and bank contactless on some vehicles in areas 1, 2 and 3. We would not arrive relying on a phone tap on every bus. Have a suitable backup and the correct product ready before boarding.

Budget separately for a lesson, beach transfer or equipment. The bus ticket gets you to the selected stop; it does not buy an activity or solve a school’s meeting point.

A town-and-lunch day without a lesson

  1. Arrive and save the return stop before wandering.

  2. Explore the centre and the seafront at your own pace.

  3. Stop for lunch, then choose more coast time or a café before the bus back.

Start with the centre and the seafront rather than heading straight for a distant surf beach. Take time to find your way around the streets and the harbour views, then make lunch the first proper pause.

Fish and shellfish are part of Ericeira’s food appeal. Ask what is being served that day and compare the menu before ordering by weight. We would leave space for a slower meal, rather than eat on the way to another transfer.

A surf day needs a different meeting point

Choose the school and session before fixing the rest of the day. Ask where you meet, whether transport to the beach is included, what equipment is provided and what happens if the conditions change.

A surfing reserve does not make every beach a beginner beach. Let the school match the session to your ability and follow the local safety instructions. A distant beach name should not become a guessed walk from the bus terminal.

Keep the end of the lesson well clear of your final return option. The school’s beach choice and session timing may change with the sea; a flexible lunch is easier to move than the last bus.

Ericeira or Cascais?

Choose Ericeira when a coastal town and surf atmosphere are the point of the day. Choose Cascais when the easier rail-based bay-and-town outing matters more, especially if you only have part of a day.

We would not combine Ericeira with a Sintra palace on a first visit. One coastal outing with lunch and room to adjust usually beats adding another set of connections.

Bring a layer for the seafront, keep an indoor pause available, and check the actual destination conditions. Lisbon’s city forecast is not a separate live surf or beach forecast for Ericeira.

Quick answers

How do I get from Lisbon to Ericeira?

Check Carris Metropolitana’s Campo Grande connection, including line 2801, for your actual date and direction. Save the return stop and service before leaving Lisbon.

Do I need a car for an Ericeira surf lesson?

Not necessarily, but arrange the school’s actual meeting point and beach transfer. A lesson outside town is a different journey from arriving at Ericeira Terminal.

Can I enjoy Ericeira without surfing?

Yes. Make a town-and-seafront day with fish or shellfish for lunch, and leave the coast time flexible around your return bus.

Keep planning
