A palace, a pastry, room to breathe

Lisbon to Sintra: make a day of it

Lisbon to Sintra works best as a day of its own. Start with the place you want to visit, book the right entry, then fit the train and lunch around it. We would rather enjoy one garden than speed-read three palaces.

Sintra old town seen from the National Palace

In short

For Lisbon to Sintra, take a CP train from Rossio or choose the service from Oriente if you are arriving from the airport. Give Sintra a full day, with one main palace or garden, lunch and the old town. Pena needs a timed interior ticket and a separate hill transfer; the park gate is not the palace entrance.

How to get from Lisbon to Sintra

From central Lisbon, Rossio is the straightforward starting point. The operator also lists Oriente and Entrecampos for Sintra trains. Use the train departure for your actual day, then check the journey back before booking the rest.

CP lists urban zapping at €2.05 per validation, with the occasional support card separately at €0.50. A Metro bank-card tap is a different product. Buy or load the right train ticket before the gates; local buses and attractions add to the day’s cost.

Choose the visit before choosing a ticket

Pena, the National Palace of Sintra, Monserrate and Quinta da Regaleira are separate visits. We would choose the one you care about most, then add something else only if the transfer and entry times leave a comfortable gap.

Which Pena visit fits your day?

Start with what you want to see, not the most expensive ticket. Open each option below to compare the included spaces. These are listed adult 18–64 prices, not live ticket availability; check your date with the operator before paying.

Park & terraces€12 adultFor a garden-led visit without the full palace interiorSee what is included
  • Park of Pena and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla
  • Palace Terraces

Do not buy this assuming it includes the full palace interior route. The park circuit transport is an optional extra, not included admission transport.

Transport is not included. This is not the Complete Visit with the Private Apartments; reserve the actual palace entry slot.

The operator describes a self-guided route with a Visitor Assistant but also uses guided wording for the approach. Do not assume a narrated tour: confirm the format and meeting instructions for your ticket.

Getting to Pena without losing the slot

  1. Read the exact palace entry time and ticket product first.

  2. Allow for the train and the separate journey uphill. Parques de Sintra lists Scotturb 434 for Pena; check its current boarding point and service.

  3. Leave around 30 minutes between entering the park and reaching the palace, as the operator advises.

  4. Be at the palace entrance for the interior slot. Do not treat arrival at the station or park gate as being on time.

Driving to Sintra does not give private-car access from the historic centre to Pena. The transfer inside Pena’s park is different again from the journey up from town.

Regaleira’s notice allows up to 60 minutes after its ticket time. That is Regaleira’s rule, not extra time for a Pena ticket.

Our Sintra day plan: one main visit, then the town

  1. Morning: take the train and make the booked palace or garden the first anchor. Leave the rest of the morning open for the grounds and transfers.

  2. Lunch: return to the historic centre rather than booking a second distant stop straight after the entry slot.

  3. Afternoon: wander the town and stop at Piriquita for a travesseiro, a puff-pastry sweet, or a queijada, a small cheese tart.

  4. Before leaving: check the return service and allow for the walk back to the station. Keep dinner in Lisbon flexible.

If the weather or access changes, simplify the day instead of trying to recover every planned stop. Our Lisbon forecast is for Lisbon, not a separate live forecast for the Sintra hills. Use the monument notices before setting off.

Sintra and Cascais in one day?

We would split them if a palace or garden is the reason for visiting. A combination tour can solve a connection, but compare the admissions, group size, pickup and time at each place. Two names in a tour title do not tell you how much of either place you will see.

With limited time, choose Sintra for the palace-and-garden day or Cascais for the bay and coast. That leaves more room for the part you actually came for.

Quick answers

How do I get from Lisbon to Sintra by train?

Use a CP Sintra service from Rossio, or check Oriente and Entrecampos for your starting point. Choose the actual outward and return departures, then arrange the separate journey to your palace or garden.

Which Pena Palace ticket should I buy?

Choose for the visit you want: the Full Tour, Essential visit and park visit are different products. Compare the operator’s inclusions and entry time; the park-to-palace transfer is a separate supplement.

Does the Pena ticket time mean arriving at the park gate?

No. The interior ticket time is at the palace entrance. Leave time for the hill transfer and the operator’s roughly 30-minute approach from the park entrance.

Is one day enough for Sintra and Cascais?

We would give Sintra a separate day if you want time inside a palace or garden. A combination tour is another option, but check the actual stops, admissions and transfer plan before booking.
