a little uphill, a little wiser
Know the hills.
Enjoy the walk.
In Lisbon, the shortest line is rarely the whole story. See the mapped streets, the climb and the stairs before you set off. Pick two places; your route updates straight away.

Estimated time excludes unplanned stops, crossings and any uncounted steps. No route here is certified step-free or wheelchair-accessible.
This route includes mapped stairs or a modelled slope over 8%. Check a lift before counting on it; unconfirmed hints do not change your walking route.

“Gentler” balances walking time, modelled climb and mapped stairs. It may take you further round. “Avoid” excludes mapped stairs, gates and modelled gradients over 8%; sometimes no route meets those conditions.
Neither option guarantees step-free access. Untagged steps, kerbs, roadworks, locked gates and the final entrance may be missing from the map. If access is essential, confirm it before setting off.
After rain, take Lisbon’s stone paving slowly. Good grip and a little extra time make a difference.
About those tempting lifts.
Carris’s current notice lists Santa Justa, Bica, Glória and Lavra as out of service during testing. Graça has a separate service notice. These closed services are not used as operating shortcuts in this route tool. Check the current Carris notice ↗
Public pedestrian lifts can help with some hills. The tool can include a connection only with mapped access points, a recent operating report, usable published hours and the required access information. Otherwise it keeps the walk. EMEL’s pedestrian accessibility information ↗
Coverage: central Lisbon, including Santos, Chiado, Bairro Alto, Príncipe Real, Baixa and Alfama. Reference pins are public places, not a private home or your current position.

How this walking tool works
Routes follow a local snapshot of public OpenStreetMap contributors’ data, ODbL, acquired 2026-10-20. Unknown surfaces and step counts remain unknown. Download the derived street graph and source information.
Elevation uses Copernicus GLO-30 surface data, smoothed over roughly 90 metres and interpolated along the route at intervals no greater than 10 metres. This is not a 10-metre ground survey: buildings, trees and older acquisition dates can distort local slopes. Heights, climb and walking times are estimates, not measured access conditions.
Walking time uses Tobler’s walking model with an urban factor of 0.85, plus three seconds per known mapped step. Crossings, stops, uncounted steps and entrances are not timed. The directions service may choose a different route.
