Oriente first. The palace is another journey.

Lisbon airport to Sintra

Lisbon airport to Sintra can use Oriente for the train connection, without a detour to Rossio in central Lisbon. Decide whether you are heading to accommodation, the old town or a palace first: those are different final legs.

Sintra old town seen from the National Palace

In short

From Lisbon airport to Sintra, take the Red-line Metro to Oriente, then choose the actual CP service to Sintra. Buy the correct product for each operator and check the final journey to your accommodation or attraction. Sintra station is not Pena Palace: a hill transfer and the approach inside the park come before a timed interior visit.

Airport to Sintra by Metro and CP train

  1. At Aeroporto, take the Red-line Metro in the São Sebastião direction and get off at Oriente.

  2. Follow the CP railway signs at Oriente. Check the actual departure and train destination for Sintra.

  3. Use your CP ticket or accepted product at the railway gates, then board the correct service.

  4. At Sintra, continue to your specific accommodation, the historic centre or a separately planned monument transfer.

Rossio is useful when you are already in central Lisbon, but it is not the starting point you need to reach first from the airport. Oriente gives you the connection described here. Check the service for your day before relying on it after a late landing.

Keep the full address and final approach available before leaving Wi-Fi. Sintra, Portela de Sintra, a village address and a hilltop attraction should not be treated as interchangeable destination pins.

A Metro ticket is not the train ticket

For the Metro leg, selected 2026 options include €1.92 by accepted bank card or €1.72 with zapping. CP lists its own Lisbon urban zapping at €2.05 per validation. The occasional support card is separately €0.50 where needed.

Choose one appropriate product for each part, not several alternatives for the same leg. A Metro bank-card tap does not include the CP train, and the train fare does not buy a palace or bus ticket.

Before loading an occasional card, check what is already on it and compare the proper combined products if you will use more transport during the day. Each traveller needs their own accepted ticket, card or device.

From Sintra station to the place you actually booked

For Pena, Parques de Sintra lists Scotturb 434 as the local bus option. Check the current service and boarding point. The journey from the station up to the park is separate from the transfer sold inside Pena’s grounds.

The timed interior entry is at the palace entrance. The operator asks you to allow about 30 minutes between the park gate and the palace. A train arriving before the printed slot is not, on its own, a workable palace plan.

For accommodation, use the actual address and agree arrival arrangements directly. Do not buy a tight attraction slot for landing day unless the flight, bags and onward journey leave enough room to change the plan.

Keep luggage out of the palace-day plan

Before booking the first visit, decide where the bags will go and how you will collect them. Ask your accommodation about its actual bag-drop arrangements, or book a suitable storage service. Do not assume every attraction can hold a suitcase.

Keep travel documents, medication and valuables with you. A day around a fixed collection time is easier if the final visit is near that collection point, rather than another destination across the hills.

With heavy luggage or tired children, compare a booked car to the actual address. Arrange the vehicle, child seats or access needs specifically rather than relying on a generic airport-transfer label.

Sintra to Lisbon airport: work backwards from the flight

Check the CP return to Oriente and then the Red-line connection towards Aeroporto. Choose for the actual date, station and required airport arrival, not a saved journey-time example.

Add the approach to Sintra station, waits, interchange, bags and airport procedures. For an early departure, compare an arranged car if the first rail connection does not fit the airline’s instructions.

Check whether the flight leaves Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The T1-to-T2 shuttle, its waiting time and the rest of the departure process need room in the plan.

Quick answers

Do I need to go to Rossio from the airport for Sintra?

No. The route described here uses the Red-line Metro to Oriente and then a CP service to Sintra. Rossio is another useful starting point when you are already in central Lisbon.

Does the airport train route finish at Pena Palace?

No. Sintra station and Pena are separate parts of the journey. Arrange the hill transfer, then leave the operator’s roughly 30-minute approach inside the park before the palace interior slot.

Should I book a palace straight after landing?

We would leave landing day flexible unless the flight, bags, rail connection and palace approach leave enough room. Choose the visit and its entry conditions before committing to a tight slot.
