One indoor anchor, time for lunch

Lisbon in the rain: make a day of it

Lisbon in the rain works best with one indoor anchor. Choose an aquarium, an exhibition or something to make, keep lunch nearby and leave the outdoor part optional.

In short

With children, start with the Oceanário. For art, choose MAAT or MAC/CCB in Belém, or CAM near Gulbenkian. For a smaller outing around Santos, try the Puppet Museum. For a hands-on afternoon, book a nata or tile workshop. These are alternatives, not a route to do all in one day.

Choose one good outing

If it is just a passing shower, a café pause may be all you need. For persistent rain, give the day an indoor anchor. Check our Lisbon forecast before booking; the full-month seasonal averages are not daily forecasts.

  1. Lisbon Oceanarium
    01

    Parque das Nações

    An aquarium day

Choose the Oceanário, lunch and no cross-city rush afterwards.

    Visit details & planning

The Oceanário makes a simple plan: the visit, lunch, and no heroic dash across the city afterwards. It is in Parque das Nações, not beside Belém. Make it your outing rather than an extra squeezed into a different museum day.

The useful bits: normal opening is daily, 10:00–20:00, with last entry at 19:00 and special Christmas/New Year hours. Exhibition text is in Portuguese and English; the operator lists ramps, lifts and baby-changing facilities. Choose the ticket and time that suit your group—prices vary by visit time.

Getting there: Oriente on the Red Metro line is the public-transport reference. There is still an outdoor final leg. In heavy rain, compare a taxi or app car to the actual entrance, especially with a pushchair.

If the weather clears: add waterfront time. If not, skip it without feeling you have missed half the plan. Our compact Oceanário day plan keeps the outdoor part optional.

    Belém or Gulbenkian

    An art day

Compare MAAT, MAC/CCB and CAM, including their different closed weekdays.

    BELÉM · ART & ARCHITECTURE

    MAAT

Choose this for an exhibition you actually want to see, then keep lunch nearby. Normal opening is Wednesday–Monday, 10:00–19:00; closed Tuesdays, with holiday exceptions. Don’t leave ticket collection to the last minute: the ticket office may close early when busy.

BELÉM · MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART

    MAC/CCB

A different art choice in the same district. Normal opening is Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:30; last admission 18:00 and closed Mondays. Check which exhibitions your ticket covers. If lift access is essential, ask CCB before visiting: its platform lift can be unavailable.

Prefer the Gulbenkian side of town?

CAM is another indoor art option, separate from the main Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. Normal hours are 10:00–18:00, Saturdays until 21:00, and closed Tuesdays. Use São Sebastião or Praça de Espanha as Metro references and check the final approach. The garden and open-sided canopy are not fully indoor attractions.

Leave the river stroll or gardens as a bonus, not part of the ticket’s value. Check the approach and building access if steps are a concern.

  3. Museu da Marioneta
    03

    Santos

    A smaller Santos outing

Visit the Puppet Museum collection, then choose an indoor table nearby.

    Visit details & planning

For a smaller outing in our part of town, choose Museu da Marioneta rather than committing to a cross-city day. The collection gives the visit its shape; afterwards, pick a nearby café or lunch from the Santos & Madragoa guide.

Normal opening is Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30; closed Mondays and listed holidays. A collection visit is not the same as a performance or workshop. For children, check the separate programme’s age, language and booking requirements—ask about English-language sessions before turning up.

Neighbourhood is one of Umur’s coffee favourites, but on a wet day the practical detail is an indoor table. Check the café’s current service and seating rather than building the plan around a terrace.

    Nata or tile painting

    Pastry or a paintbrush?

Book Nat’elier or D’Orey; leave time for tile firing before your flight.

    Visit details & planning

This is the option for a day that feels like more than hiding from the rain. Book one session, enjoy it properly, and let the rest of the afternoon stay loose.

Nat’elier · from pastry to warm nata

The operator’s class lasts around two hours, with pastry and custard made from scratch and three pastéis de nata (custard tarts) made by you. Regular sessions are offered in English and Portuguese. Group classes welcome children aged 8+; younger children need a private arrangement.

Confirm the session and meeting point before setting off. The recipe uses dairy, eggs and wheat, and the kitchen is not gluten-free. Discuss allergies directly before booking.

    D’Orey Tiles · a paintbrush afternoon

A beginner-friendly tile-painting session of about one hour, with materials included. The catch worth knowing before your last day: your tile needs firing. The operator lists collection after 3–4 working days, or shipping for an extra charge. Ask how that fits your departure.

Confirm the language, child suitability, workshop door and current terms. Book a session before setting off.

Before you set off

  1. Holidays, exhibition changes and sold-out sessions can change the plan. Check the official page before paying or travelling.
  2. A museum can be indoors while the queue, Metro approach and walk to lunch are not. Cobbles and steep lanes are less forgiving when wet; choose shoes with grip and shorten the walk.
  3. Carmo’s roofless nave, viewpoints and rooftops are not fully enclosed alternatives. A tram ride can still mean an exposed queue and crowded boarding; it can involve standing and exposed queues.
  4. Choose an indoor table in the same area. Our food guide and Umut’s wine picks help with the evening; menus, seating and opening times still need checking.
  5. Use IPMA’s Lisboa warnings ↗ and current operator notices. A reserved ticket is not a reason to ignore a closure or warning.

Quick answers

What can we do in Lisbon when it rains with children?

The Oceanário is our simple indoor anchor. For a smaller Santos outing, consider the Puppet Museum collection. Nat’elier’s regular classes start at age 8. Check the activity’s age, language, access and ticket requirements rather than assuming every option fits every child.

Which museums can we choose on Monday or Tuesday?

On a normal Monday, MAAT, CAM and the Oceanário are options; MAC/CCB and the Puppet Museum are closed. On a normal Tuesday, MAC/CCB, the Puppet Museum and the Oceanário are options; MAAT and CAM are closed. Holiday exceptions and current closures take priority.

Can we take our painted tile home the same day?

Not for the D’Orey workshop described here: firing takes time, with collection listed after 3–4 working days or paid shipping. Confirm the arrangement before booking, especially near the end of your stay.

Do we need to cross the city to fill a rainy day?

No. One indoor visit and a nearby meal can be enough. Santos, Belém, Parque das Nações and the Gulbenkian area are separate choices, not stops on one rainproof route.
