Land first. Choose the last leg carefully.
Lisbon airport to city centre
Lisbon airport to city centre is not one journey to one stop. Choose your neighbourhood first, then compare the Red-line Metro with a car to the actual address. Bags, a late landing and the final hill can matter more than a saved travel-time example.

In short
From Lisbon airport to city centre, use the Red-line Metro for a suitable station connection or compare a licensed taxi and an app-car quote for your address. For Baixa-Chiado or Cais do Sodré, change to the Green line at Alameda. Check the last walk and lift status, especially with bags. ANA’s 20-minute example ends at Saldanha, not every hotel.
Metro or a car: decide for the whole journey
The Metro is useful when the stations fit your destination and your bags are manageable. A car is simpler when the last leg involves tired children, awkward luggage or an address far from a suitable station. Compare the actual destination rather than a generic “city centre” pin.
Before leaving airport Wi-Fi, save the address and the final approach. A line on a network diagram does not show the last hill, steps or an entrance on the other side of a building. If access matters for your group, check it before choosing the cheapest-looking route.
| Option | Useful for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | A suitable station and manageable bags | Interchange plus final walk |
| Licensed taxi | An address-to-address journey | Meter or the separate airport voucher product |
| App-booked car | Comparing the actual quote | Pickup plus passenger and bag capacity |
Metro from the airport: choose your city connection
At Aeroporto, take the Red line in the São Sebastião direction.
For Baixa-Chiado or Cais do Sodré, change at Alameda to the Green line towards Cais do Sodré.
For a CP connection towards Sintra, choose Oriente instead. Check the actual train destination and departure before changing platforms.
At your city stop, follow the appropriate exit for your address and check the final walk.
ANA’s roughly 20-minute Metro example is Aeroporto–Saldanha. It is not a total to a hotel in Baixa, Santos or another neighbourhood. Include waiting, the interchange and the last walk in your own plan.
Buy the ticket for the operators you will use
For the Metro, the selected 2026 products are €1.92 with an accepted bank card, €1.72 with zapping, or €1.90 for the Carris/Metro ticket. The €0.50 occasional support card is separate where required.
These are alternatives, not charges to add together for one Metro ride. Each traveller needs their own accepted ticket, card or device. A Metro bank-card tap does not include an onward CP train to Cascais or Sintra.
Choose the combined product only if it matches the day you will actually have. A short airport transfer and a full day of tram, Metro and train travel can call for different tickets.
Find the right taxi or app pickup
Use the official taxi queue or book through the app. ANA lists app-car pickup at P2, Level 2, arrivals level. Follow the current signs and the point assigned in your app, then match the driver and number plate.
For a metered taxi, check the meter and ask for a receipt. The Turismo de Lisboa airport voucher is a separate product with destination-zone and time conditions. Compare its current amount for your address rather than treating it as the price of every taxi or app car.
If you need a child seat, accessible vehicle or extra room for bags, arrange that vehicle specifically. A standard car choice does not settle those details.
A late landing needs an onward plan
Under normal conditions, Metro hours are 06:30–01:00. That closing-time rule does not mean every line change and onward train will still be possible after a late landing. Include the time to leave the aircraft, collect bags and reach the station.
If the connection is tight, compare a car quote to your address before committing to the rail journey. Keep accommodation arrival instructions separate from transport planning, and tell your accommodation if your arrival time changes.
For the return flight, check the airline’s terminal and bag-drop instructions. Terminal 2 needs its own transfer plan; do not use the city journey alone as your airport allowance.
Quick answers
Can I take the Metro from Lisbon airport to the city centre?
Yes. Take the Red line from Aeroporto and choose the interchange for your destination. Baixa-Chiado and Cais do Sodré use a change to the Green line at Alameda.
Is every airport-to-city journey about 20 minutes?
No. ANA’s roughly 20-minute Metro example ends at Saldanha. Waiting, another line, the station exit and the walk to your address add to the full journey.
Are taxis, airport vouchers and Uber the same price?
No. A metered taxi, a Turismo de Lisboa voucher and an app-car quote are different products. Confirm the actual destination, capacity and amount before choosing.
Can I take the Metro from Lisbon airport after midnight?
Only if you have time to board and complete the connections you need. Normal Metro hours are 06:30–01:00; a late boarding may leave too little time to change lines. Allow for leaving the aircraft and collecting bags, then compare a licensed taxi or app car if the timing is tight.
Where do I find Uber or Bolt at Lisbon airport?
ANA lists app-car pickup at P2, Level 2, arrivals level. Follow the current signs and the pickup point assigned in your app, then check the driver and number plate. Use your exact destination address rather than a generic city-centre pin.
