Join up the day. Not every hill.

Getting around Lisbon, one good connection at a time

Choose transport for the day you want, not a challenge to use every kind of ticket. The Metro can do the longer stretch, a tram can be part of the outing, and a shorter walk can leave more time for lunch. Sort the actual journey first; then choose how to pay.

In short

Getting around Lisbon is easier when you separate the route from the ticket. Metro, Carris buses and trams, CP trains and ferries do not all use one universal fare. Compare the €1.90 Carris/Metro single and €7.25 day ticket with what you will actually use. Check the final walk and current service before leaving.

Compare three ways to pay

Count separate journeys you would pay for, not every boarding. A valid Carris/Metro single can cover transfers within its conditions; do not count that same ticket twice.

The comparison needs JavaScript. The official fares and ticket conditions below remain available.

Standard 2026 adult prices, checked 18 October 2026. A day ticket runs from first validation, not midnight. No booking, payment or details are sent by this tool.

Choose for the whole journey

For a day in one neighbourhood, begin with the places you actually want to visit and consider a short walk between them. For a longer cross-city stretch, use the Metro network diagram and look at the final station approach. The shortest route is not always the easiest one with luggage or a pushchair.

Carris trams and buses are a different network from Metro and from CP rail. An intercity train, a coastal train and a city tram may all appear on one travel day, but that does not make their tickets interchangeable. Match each leg before choosing a pass.

How to buy a Metro ticket

For a ticket or zapping credit, use a Metro ticket vending machine or ticket office. You can buy and load a navegante occasional card there. Keep the purchase or loading receipt in case the card has a problem. Staffed ticket-office availability depends on the sales point; use the operator’s sales network for a particular station.

If you choose accepted bank-card contactless instead, pay at the fare gates rather than loading zapping credit onto that bank card. Each traveller needs a separate accepted payment card or device. These are different ways to pay, not extra steps to complete for the same ride.

A ticket is more than the price on the screen

A Carris/Metro single is €1.90, with 60-minute conditions and no consecutive Metro entries. The €7.25 basic day ticket lasts 24 hours from first validation. The occasional support card is another €0.50 if you need one, and can hold only one type of loaded product at a time.

Zapping is credit: the checked Metro journey is €1.72, and changing operator can mean another charge. It is not a combined ticket. The comparison above covers three standard city-only purchase options. Choose by your actual journeys; other products may suit a different trip.

CP trains and the ferry need the right extension

The €11.40 Carris/Metro/CP product includes Lisbon’s CP urban network; the €10.35 product instead adds the Cacilhas connection. Do not assume that one of these covers the other, a separately operated bus at your destination or the train to Porto.

Decide the actual onward route before loading the card. Sintra and Cascais need different rail approaches from central Lisbon. Keep separate time for a palace bus, a beach connection or a luggage collection at the end of the day.

Heading home after a late evening

The Metro’s normal network window is 06:30–01:00 daily. Leave time for any interchange, and check the service notices before relying on the last part of it. A station entrance or lift can have a different operating arrangement.

For a car journey, compare the current quote for the actual destination and vehicle. Choose the legal pickup point, match the driver and number plate, and keep a backup for a changed plan. We do not show a fixed late-night car fare or a live vehicle availability claim here.

Make the final few minutes easier

Look beyond the coloured line on the map: steps, slopes, entrances and bags matter at the far end. Use the official accessibility diagram together with current lift notices. If you need assistance, ask the relevant operator before buying a journey you could not comfortably use.

Keep tickets and confirmations available without depending on a new Wi-Fi connection. Each passenger needs their own accepted ticket or payment device. At Metro bank-card gates, enter and leave with that same card or device; a phone and its linked plastic card are not interchangeable for the journey.

Quick answers

Should I buy a Lisbon day pass?

Compare the separate journeys you would otherwise pay for within one consecutive 24-hour window. The basic Carris/Metro day ticket costs €7.25 plus a support card if needed. Zapping, concessions and attraction passes need their own comparison.

Does one Lisbon ticket cover every train and ferry?

No. The basic Carris/Metro product is different from the CP urban and Cacilhas ferry extensions. Porto intercity tickets, separate onward buses and other ferry routes need their own check.

Is walking the best way to get around Lisbon?

A short neighbourhood walk can be a good part of the day. For a longer stretch or a journey with bags, compare the actual slopes, station access and transport connection rather than using distance alone.

Is paying by bank card the same as zapping?

No. A Metro bank-card journey is €1.92 and uses the same card or device at both gates. Zapping is prepaid credit with operator-specific charges and validity.
