Portugal picks Lufthansa for TAP’s minority sale

Added 18 Oct 2026

Portugal chose Lufthansa for a 44.9% stake in TAP, with up to 5% more if employees do not take their allocation. The announced plan keeps the TAP brand, headquarters and Lisbon hub. A potential majority sale would be a separate process.

If you’re here: This is an ownership announcement, not a new flight timetable. Check the details of your own journey with the airline.

November’s IRS withholding is set to fall by half

Added 18 Oct 2026

Portugal announced a 50% reduction in income-tax withholding on employment income and pensions paid in November 2026, including Christmas bonuses paid that month. The government said the adjustment had been published; December returns to the existing tables. This concerns withholding, not a 50% cut to everyone’s final annual tax bill.

If you’re here: For a November payslip or pension, check the applicable table with payroll or your tax adviser; individual amounts depend on circumstances.

IMF's October outlook projects 2.1% growth for Portugal

Added 18 Oct 2026

The IMF's October World Economic Outlook projects Portugal's real GDP to grow by 2.1% in 2026 and 1.9% in 2027. These are annual economic forecasts, rather than a measure of any household's income. The report was released on 13 October and uses information available through 1 October.

If you’re here: Keep national forecasts separate from your own budget: rent, wages and everyday prices can follow different paths.

September inflation reaches 3.6% in INE's final figures

Added 18 Oct 2026

INE's final September figures, released on 13 October, put annual consumer-price inflation at 3.6%, up 0.3 percentage points from August. Core inflation, excluding unprocessed food and energy, was 2.7%; energy prices rose 15.3% year on year. These national measures describe different price baskets, rather than the increase in every household's costs.

If you’re here: Compare changes in your own spending with the relevant categories; the headline rate is a national average.
